On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, two lithium-ion battery powered fuel cell buses entered passenger service in São Bernardo do Campo in Brazil. The São Paulo Metropolitan Urban Transport Company, EMTU/SP, an institution of the Government of the São Paulo State, oversees the program.
The electric buses are operating on the bus corridor “São Mateus-Jabaquara (ABD)”, along the line 287-P, from the terminal Santo André to Piraporinha, in Diadema, operated by the private bus operator Metra. It transports an average of 300,000 passengers daily, connecting 5 municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, with 9 metropolitan terminals, 5 transfer stations, 156 bus stops and a fleet with 302 vehicles.
Valence Technology, a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, partnered with the UNDP/GEF (United Nations Development Programme/Global Environment Facility) to supply the battery and battery management systems for their ongoing program, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses for Urban Transport in Brazil. The 442 V, 61 kWh battery system in each bus contains 46 Valence UEV-18XP battery modules and a Valence Battery Management system module to protect and monitor the battery array and communicate with the Vehicle Management System. The Zero Emission Buses are considered a Hybrid of Fuel Cell and Battery power. The batteries assist the fuel cell during acceleration and captures energy from the regenerative braking. Safe lithium iron magnesium phosphate chemistry along with fast recharge time make this a great solution for São Paulo Metropolitan Urban Transport.
